In the 50s it served as a symbol of social status. It was a way for boys to boast about their athletic talent, and girls to boast about dating a boy with athletic talent. Clearly timeless, the varsity jacket has reintroduced itself into campus fashion. However this time, with a little more class.
The varsity jacket really made its comeback a few years ago, appearing in the collections of Thom Browne, Phillip Lim, Patrik Ervell, Wayne Lee, Rag & Bone, Peter Som and Calvin Klein circa 2012. With a modern twist, it was quickly reestablished as a classic staple, and not just for high school jocks.
With athleisure on the rise, it only makes sense that the classic sporty jacket has resurfaced once again. Athletic stripes, pins and varsity letters were common accents in Marc Jacob’s 2016 spring collection, which went down the runway this fall.
The varsity jacket is sure to become a popular piece this season because of its versatility. Somewhere between a sweatshirt and a nicer coat, it can easily be dressed up or down. Additionally, the jacket is available in a multitude of colors, patterns and textures to fit every style. It is almost begging to be personalized, often paired with assorted pins and buttons.
Show your school spirit this season with the hottest piece on and off the field.
